Passion

Oberammergau, a quaint village surrounded by majestic Alps. Endeared for its strong Bavarian traditions of dirndls, lederhosen, murals, crafts and woodcarving and world-renowned for its Passion Play performed once every decade. The Play involves over 2000 actors and singers, all local residents. The history of the Passion Play dates back to 1633 when Bavaria was plagued. The elders of Oberammergau promised that if the village was purged of plague they would perform the ‘Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ’ every ten years. The epidemic came to a standstill, and in 1634 the villagers fulfilled their vow for the first time. Since that day, people from all over the world have attended the play, which is not only a testimony of faith, but also a prominent cultural event.
